Introducing Team Rankings, Player Ratings, and Replay Stats

We're incredibly excited to finally introduce some more advanced features to the site that have been requested for a while now. We've been working on Team Rankings, Player Ratings, and Replay Stats over the last month to make sure they are all as accurate as possible with the data that we have collected. Additionally, we have expanded our coverage to the Asian region as mentioned in this article and so full Asian stats are available site-wide for all major events and will continue to be collected going forward. Here is a look at all the new additions with detailed explanations on our methodology.

Team Rankings

With more major events taking place in the scene, we felt it was an appropriate time to finally develop an automated team ranking system. Our Team Rankings can be found here (by clicking "Teams" on the navbar) and will be updated every Wednesday. The rankings page shows a team's ranking, roster, rating, and change from the previous week. Regional Rankings are also available through the use of the sidebar navigation.

Methodology

Our Team Ranking utilizes our rating algorithm to rank teams based on the combination of two sub-ratings — Placement Rating and Match Rating. The Placement Rating is used as a long-term rating that looks at team achievements in events throughout the last year. Teams gain points towards their Placement Rating based on an inverse relationship of their final placement at an event. Modifiers are applied to each placement based on the event tier, whether the event was international, whether the event was on LAN, and days since the event. The points awarded towards their rating decay exponentially each day after the event has taken place.

On the other hand the Match Rating is a used as a short-term rating that looks at head-to-head match results against other teams over the last 3 months. Wins award the team with points towards their Match Rating based on an inverse relationship of their opponent's final placement at an event. Likewise, losses take away points from the rating. The deeper into the tournament a team gets, wins are worth even more. The same exact modifiers used in the Placement Rating are applied to this rating. Unlike the Placement Rating, the Match Rating can be negative and therefore take away points from the overall rating and is a good indicator of recent performance.

Both the Placement Rating and Match Rating are combined together to give the final rating that is shown on the rankings page. Additionally, charts of a team's ranking over time is available on each team page.

Player Ratings

Players are now given a rating for each game that they played based on their stats in that game. Because replay data isn't available for the vast majority of competitions, these ratings only utilize information from the end-game scoreboards. Ratings are shown on series pages for series ratings, career stats pages for career ratings, and event stats pages for event ratings. Additionally, ratings can be seen on player match pages to quickly assess how players have played across different series

Player ratings can also be seen on the "Recent" tab under "Stats", which includes stats over the course of the last three months to give a sense of which players have been playing well recently.

Methodology

The Player Ratings are pretty simple since they only consist of scoreboard stats for now. We utilize the seven major stats (Score, Goals, Assists, Saves, Shots, Shooting Percentage, and Goal Participation) and compare each of these to the professional average. Each of the seven comparisons is then averaged out to give the final rating.
